Russell, the 11th overall selection in the 2012 draft for Oakland, began his pro career with the Arizona League A's before being promoted to Vermont on August 2nd. The 18-year-old hit 340 (18-for-53) with nine runs, two doubles, two triples, one homer and seven RBI in 13 games for the Lake Monsters before being promoted to the Single-A Burlington Bees.
Pitchers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock are the third and fourth top prospects in the A's organization. Both played for Vermont when the Lake Monsters were affiliated with the Washington Nationals and joined the A's organization last December in the trade that brought Gio Gonzalez to Washington.
The other two former Lake Monsters ranked among the top 10 A's prospects are Daniel Robertson and Matt Olson. Both, like Russell, were taken in the first round of the 2012 draft and joined the Lake Monsters late in the 2012 season from the Arizona A's.
Robertson, ranked ninth, hit .181 (17-for-94) with nine runs, two doubles, one homer and eight RBI in 26 games with the Lake Monsters. Olsen played in the final four games of the season with Vermont, hitting .273 (3-for-11) with three runs, one homer and four RBI.
